If a meaningful share of your volume runs through Walmart — in stores or online — then Walmart Connect, Walmart’s retail media network, is often the single highest-leverage place for a small CPG brand to start advertising. Here’s why, and how to think about it.
Why Walmart Connect punches above its weight
It’s less saturated than Amazon, the shopper is there to buy household and grocery goods (high intent), and there’s frequently a tight link between your online ad and your in-store presence. For many CPG brands, the ceiling is lower than Amazon’s but the floor is a lot friendlier — you can get efficient results without an army of analysts.
Start with Sponsored Products
As with every platform, begin with sponsored product placements — the boosted results in Walmart search. They put you in front of shoppers at the deciding moment, they’re the simplest format to manage, and they’re the closest to the sale. Save the fancier formats for after you have data.
The in-store connection matters
Walmart shoppers cross the line between digital and physical constantly — checking the app in the aisle, buying online for pickup, researching before a store run. That means your Walmart.com listing and your shelf presence reinforce each other. A strong online listing can lift in-store consideration, and vice versa.
Advertise where you already have distribution and velocity. Walmart Connect rewards brands that are already on the shelf and want to be found faster.
Get your item pages right first
Walmart’s search, like everyone’s, favors complete, well-built item pages. Before you spend, make sure your main image, title, key features, and specifications are filled out and accurate. Sending paid traffic to a half-finished page is the fastest way to waste budget.
Watch attributed sales
Walmart Connect reports the sales its ads drive. Judge success on product moved and the cost to move it — not on clicks or impressions. Concentrate budget on your best items, prove the lift, then expand.
Who it’s best for
Brands already carried by Walmart, first-time advertisers who want a friendlier on-ramp than Amazon, and CPG brands whose growth is tied to physical retail. If that’s you, Walmart Connect is often the smart first move.
